Uganda

The Pearl of Africa — Gorillas, Chimps, Nile & Savanna

Uganda self-drive 4×4 hire opens the most biodiverse country in East Africa. All key national parks are accessible within a single overland circuit from Kampala.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest NP
Home to almost half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Guided trekking through ancient rainforest leads to an hour with a gorilla family — consistently rated one of the world’s greatest wildlife encounters.
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Famous for tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector and the Kazinga Channel boat cruise — one of Africa’s finest waterside wildlife experiences with hippos, crocodiles and 600+ bird species.
Murchison Falls NP
The entire Nile forces through a 7-metre rock gap — the world’s most powerful waterfall. The boat trip to the base and northern savanna game drives deliver lions, elephants, giraffes and the rare shoebill stork.
Kibale Forest NP
The primate capital of Africa — 1,500 chimpanzees and the world’s highest density of primates. Guided chimp tracking brings you within metres of habituated communities in their natural forest habitat.
Kidepo Valley NP
Uganda’s most remote and spectacular park in the northeast. Lions, cheetahs, bat-eared foxes and large elephant herds against dramatic volcanic mountains — with almost no other tourists.
02

Kenya

Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo & the Great Rift Valley

Kenya 4×4 self-drive safari puts the world’s most iconic wildlife landscapes within reach. Kenya’s good roads and year-round wildlife make it one of Africa’s most rewarding self-drive destinations.

Masai Mara National Reserve
Home to the Great Wildebeest Migration — 1.5 million wildebeest crossing the Mara River from July to October. Year-round home to Africa’s most famous lion prides, leopards and cheetahs on open plains.
Amboseli National Park
Iconic elephant-against-Kilimanjaro photography found nowhere else on earth. Large free-ranging herds, wildebeest and zebra on open swamp ecosystems with predators hunting openly on the plains.
Tsavo East & West NP
Kenya’s largest park system. Red-dust elephants in Tsavo East; crystal-clear Mzima Springs in Tsavo West with an underwater chamber for observing hippos and crocodiles below the surface.
Lake Nakuru NP
Great Rift Valley park famous for both black and white rhinos and its enormous flamingo flocks. One of Kenya’s most important rhino sanctuaries alongside lions, leopards and Rothschild giraffes.
Samburu National Reserve
The only place to see the Samburu Special Five: Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich and the gerenuk. Dramatic semi-arid landscape with the Ewaso Nyiro River as its lifeblood.
03

Tanzania

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro & Zanzibar

Tanzania self-drive safari offers the full spectrum of Africa in one country — endless plains, volcanic craters, primate forests, tropical islands and Kilimanjaro.

Serengeti National Park
Africa’s most iconic park. Year-round wildebeest migration, Africa’s largest resident lion prides and dramatic Mara River crossings from July to September. The northern Serengeti delivers the most intense predator action.
Ngorongoro Crater
The world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. 600-metre walls enclose 260 sq km of permanently resident wildlife — lions, leopards, rhinos, hippos and 25,000 large animals in one astonishing arena.
Tarangire National Park
Ancient baobab forests and Tanzania’s highest elephant density. The dry season Tarangire River draws massive concentrations of wildlife. Wild dogs and large lion prides are regular sightings.
Ruaha National Park
Tanzania’s largest park and most rewarding secret. Highest lion population in Tanzania, huge elephant herds, rare roan and sable antelopes, and 570 bird species — with a fraction of the tourist traffic.
Zanzibar Island
The perfect post-safari retreat. UNESCO-listed Stone Town’s spice markets and Swahili architecture contrast with turquoise Indian Ocean beaches and world-class coral reef diving on the east coast.
04

Rwanda

Land of a Thousand Hills — Gorillas, Golden Monkeys & Volcanoes

Rwanda 4×4 hire from Kigali is the most accessible gateway to mountain gorilla trekking. Rwanda’s clean roads and compact size make it East Africa’s most self-drive-friendly destination.

Volcanoes NP — Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Over a dozen habituated gorilla families on the Virunga Volcano slopes. The Susa group — one of the world’s largest gorilla families — is Rwanda’s most celebrated. Permits must be booked well in advance.
Golden Monkey Trekking
Found only in the Virunga bamboo forests. More accessible than gorilla trekking and equally magical — charismatic golden-coated primates moving through bamboo at close quarters in spectacular mountain scenery.
Nyungwe Forest NP
13 primate species including habituated chimpanzees. The forest canopy walkway — 70 metres above the rainforest floor — is one of Rwanda’s most breathtaking and unique experiences.
Akagera National Park
Rwanda’s Big Five park following successful lion and rhino reintroduction. Lake Ihema boat safaris deliver outstanding hippo, crocodile and waterbird viewing alongside large elephant herds.
Lake Kivu
One of Africa’s most beautiful lakes forming the border with DR Congo. Boat excursions to fishing island communities, kayaking and a relaxed beach atmosphere at Gisenyi and Kibuye.
05

Burundi

Africa’s Best-Kept Secret — Lake Tanganyika & Ancient Rainforest

Burundi 4×4 hire serves adventurous travellers going beyond the well-worn East Africa trail. Almost entirely undiscovered by international tourism — genuine frontier Africa.

Lake Tanganyika
The world’s second-deepest lake — 250+ endemic cichlid fish species found nowhere else on earth. Crystal-clear fresh water swimming, kayaking and snorkelling at Bujumbura’s beaches with extraordinary sunset views over the Congo mountains.
Kibira National Park
One of Central Africa’s last intact montane rainforests. Protects chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and 600+ plant species across 40,000 hectares of largely unexplored mist-shrouded highland forest.
Rusizi National Park
Wetland and savanna at the northern end of Lake Tanganyika. Boat trips on the Rusizi River alongside large hippo pods and Nile crocodiles — accessible as a half-day from Bujumbura.
Karera Waterfalls
Spectacular waterfalls cascading through forested gorges in Bururi Province. Scenic drive through tea plantations and traditional villages rarely seen by outside travellers.
06

South Sudan

The Sudd, Africa’s Hidden Migration & the World’s Newest Nation

South Sudan 4×4 hire from Juba is for serious expedition travellers. This is raw, undiscovered frontier Africa — requiring reliable vehicles, professional driver-guides and careful preparation.

Boma NP — The Hidden Migration
Over one million white-eared kob, tiang and Mongalla gazelle in a seasonal migration rivalling the Serengeti in scale — witnessed by only a handful of visitors each year. One of Africa’s great undiscovered wildlife spectacles.
The Sudd Wetlands
One of the world’s largest freshwater wetlands — a UNESCO Ramsar site of global significance. Massive shoebill stork populations, Nile lechwe antelope and extraordinary waterbird diversity across 150,000 sq km of seasonal floodplain.
Nimule National Park
South Sudan’s most accessible park on the Uganda border. Bisected by the Nile, supporting elephants, buffalo, hippos and the spectacular Fola Rapids. Reachable by road from Kampala via Gulu.
Bandingilo National Park
Migration corridor for millions of antelopes on the White Nile’s eastern bank. Aerial surveys confirm wildlife populations placing Bandingilo among Africa’s great but unknown wildlife areas, with lions and giraffes year-round.
07

DR Congo

Virunga, Nyiragongo, Lowland Gorillas & the Congo Basin

DR Congo 4×4 hire is the ultimate African adventure. We manage all DRC entry logistics and border crossings from Rwanda and Uganda, with experienced driver-guides who know the terrain.

Virunga National Park
Africa’s oldest park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mountain gorillas, forest elephants, hippos, lions and chimpanzees across habitats ranging from active volcanoes to Rwindi River savannas — more species than any other African protected area.
Nyiragongo Volcano
Earth’s largest permanent lava lake. The overnight summit hike to the crater rim at 3,470m — camping on the edge of a glowing lava lake under a star-filled sky — is one of the most extraordinary experiences available anywhere in Africa.
Kahuzi-Biega NP
Last stronghold of the eastern lowland gorilla — the world’s largest gorilla subspecies. Dense montane rainforest near Bukavu with habituated gorilla groups. A completely distinct and unforgettable experience from the Virunga mountain gorilla trek.
Okapi Wildlife Reserve
UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting 13,700 sq km of Congo Basin rainforest — home to the okapi, forest elephants and chimpanzees in one of earth’s most biodiverse ecosystems. Deep Congo expedition territory.
08

Botswana

Okavango Delta, Chobe, Kalahari — The World’s Finest Self-Drive

Botswana self-drive safari is widely the benchmark for African wilderness travel. Low-density tourism, exceptional wildlife and extraordinary landscapes deliver an experience unlike anywhere else on the continent.

Chobe National Park
Highest elephant concentration on earth — over 130,000 animals. Afternoon Chobe River boat safaris with thousands of elephants bathing and swimming alongside buffalo, hippos and crocodiles in golden hour light.
Okavango Delta
UNESCO World Heritage Site — the world’s largest inland delta. 15,000 sq km of channels, islands and floodplains supporting lions, leopards, wild dogs, elephants, 550+ bird species. Game drives, mokoro canoe trips and walking safaris combined.
Moremi Game Reserve
Eastern Okavango Delta — Africa’s finest game reserve by many accounts. World’s largest wild dog population, exceptional leopard and lion sightings year-round across diverse habitats from floodplain to mopane forest.
Central Kalahari GR
One of the world’s largest protected areas. Black-maned Kalahari lions, brown hyenas, cheetahs and 20,000-year-old San Bushmen culture across 52,800 sq km of profound silence and scale unlike anything else in Africa.
Makgadikgadi Pans
Ancient salt flats — remnant of a prehistoric super-lake. Post-rain flamingo flocks and extraordinary zebra migration in wet season; shimmering white moonscape and uninterrupted Milky Way skies in the dry season.

All vehicles are serviced before every hire and GPS-fitted with loaded maps.

The fastest way is WhatsApp — message us on +256 706 620 697 with your dates, pickup location, and preferred vehicle. We typically confirm availability and send a quote within 5 minutes during business hours. You can also submit a formal quote request online and we’ll respond within 2 hours.

All our vehicle hire rates include:

  • Comprehensive vehicle insurance (COMESA third-party)
  • GPS device with pre-loaded East Africa maps
  • Spare tyre + jack + recovery gear
  • First aid kit
  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Unlimited kilometres on most bookings

Not included: fuel, park entry fees, driver/guide fees (if required), gorilla/chimp permits, and accommodation.

For peak season (June–October) and popular vehicle models like the Land Cruiser TX, we recommend booking 4–8 weeks in advance. Gorilla trekking permits (Uganda and Rwanda) require advance planning of 3–6 months for peak season. Outside peak season, we can often accommodate bookings 1–2 weeks ahead.

It depends on your route and group size:

  • Solo / couple, budget: Toyota RAV4 ($40–45/day) — handles Uganda and Rwanda park tracks well
  • Couple / small group, most routes: Land Cruiser TX Prado ($75/day) — our most popular vehicle
  • Rough terrain / DR Congo / Kidepo: Land Cruiser Hardtop or GX — proven diesel reliability
  • Group of 6–9: Hiace Safari Van or Super Custom — pop-up roof for game drives
  • Multi-week camping: Camper Land Cruiser ($180/day) — fully self-contained

Still unsure? Ask us on WhatsApp — we’ll recommend the right vehicle based on your exact itinerary.

Yes — for experienced drivers who prepare properly. Main highways between cities are generally good tarmac. National park tracks vary from well-graded murram to challenging rocky terrain, particularly in Kidepo Valley, Bwindi and parts of Tanzania’s southern circuit. Driving at night is not recommended in rural areas. Our GPS devices include offline East Africa maps and we provide a pre-departure route briefing for all clients.

Yes — an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required or strongly recommended for all countries we operate in. Obtain one from your national motoring association (AA, AAA, RAC, etc.) before travel. It must be carried alongside your original home licence. Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania all accept most national licences alongside an IDP.

All our primary destinations drive on the left (same as the UK, Australia and South Africa):

  • Uganda — Left
  • Kenya — Left
  • Tanzania — Left
  • Rwanda — Right ⚠️ (switched from left in 2009)
  • Botswana — Left
  • DR Congo — Right ⚠️

Rwanda and DRC drive on the right — factor this in when crossing from Uganda.

Self-drive gives you total freedom and is perfect for experienced travellers who enjoy independent road trips. A driver/guide ($20–25/day extra) is recommended for: first-time visitors to Uganda or Tanzania, routes that include Kidepo Valley, DR Congo or South Sudan, gorilla trekking (complex forest tracks), and anyone who wants local knowledge and wildlife spotting expertise. Most clients on 7+ day trips find a driver adds significant value.

“`
“`

Yes — cross-border travel is one of our specialities. We provide all documentation for Uganda–Rwanda, Uganda–Kenya, Uganda–Tanzania, Uganda–DRC, Uganda–Burundi, Uganda–South Sudan, and Botswana cross-border routes. Notify us at least 48 hours before your crossing so we can prepare the correct paperwork. COMESA insurance is included for all multi-country bookings.

At every East Africa border crossing you’ll need:

  • Your passport (valid 6+ months)
  • Valid visa for the destination country (or visa on arrival where applicable)
  • Vehicle cross-border letter from Car Hire Africa (we provide this)
  • Vehicle logbook/registration (we provide this)
  • COMESA third-party insurance (included)
  • International Driving Permit
  • Yellow fever vaccination card (most East Africa borders)

Yes — if you’re visiting Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda in one trip, the East African Tourist Visa ($100) covers all three countries and saves you $100+ compared to buying individual visas. It’s valid for 90 days and you can enter via any of the three countries. Apply online before travel at evisa.go.ug or the Kenya eTa portal.

“`
“`

Uganda gorilla permits cost $800 per person and are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). They must be booked in advance — peak season (June–October) permits sell out months ahead. We assist all Car Hire Africa clients with permit booking. Contact us on WhatsApp and we’ll guide you through the process.

No — national park entry fees are not included in the vehicle hire rate. They are paid separately at each park gate (or online via the respective country’s wildlife authority portal). Park fees vary by country and park: Uganda parks are typically $45/person/day; Kenya’s Masai Mara is $200/person/day; Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater is $295/person/day. We provide a full fee schedule when you book.

We accept bank transfer, Western Union/MoneyGram, and cash (USD, EUR, GBP accepted). A deposit of 30% is required to confirm a booking. Balance is due on vehicle collection. We can also process payments in Ugandan Shillings, Kenyan Shillings or Rwandan Francs at the current exchange rate.

“`
“`

All our vehicles carry a full recovery kit (spare tyre, jack, tow rope, recovery tracks). In the event of a breakdown, call our 24/7 support line immediately — we’ll dispatch a mechanic or replacement vehicle. Our network of mechanics covers all major parks in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania. Response time for remote locations like Kidepo Valley is typically 4–6 hours.

Uganda is generally very safe for tourists, including solo travellers. The main national parks and tourist routes have a strong security presence. Kampala is a busy capital with standard city precautions required. We advise against night driving on rural roads. Solo travellers frequently self-drive Uganda without issues — and adding a driver/guide is an affordable option that significantly enhances safety and wildlife spotting.

Yes — all vehicles are GPS-fitted with pre-loaded offline maps of East Africa. This means navigation works without a data connection deep in national parks. We also provide our 24/7 WhatsApp support number for all clients. For DR Congo and South Sudan expeditions, satellite communication devices are available on request.

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory at most East Africa border crossings and you must carry the original certificate. We strongly recommend consulting a travel health clinic 4–6 weeks before travel. Common recommended vaccinations include typhoid, hepatitis A and B, and tetanus. Anti-malarial medication is recommended for all Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania travel. Consult your doctor for current advice.
