Camping Safari FAQs

Do I need a 4ร—4 to reach most campsites in East Africa?

Yes โ€” the vast majority of national park campsites require a high-clearance 4ร—4, especially in the wet season. Tracks to campsites inside parks like Bwindi, Kidepo, Moremi and the Serengeti are impassable in a standard vehicle. All our vehicles are purpose-built 4ร—4s. See our full fleet here.

What camping gear does Car Hire Africa provide?

Our full camping gear package costs just $5/day and includes mattresses, pillows, cooler box, cooking gear, chairs and tables. Rooftop tents are available on most 4ร—4 models โ€” request this when you get a quote.

Which campsite vehicle is the best choice?

For couples camping 1โ€“2 weeks, we recommend the Land Cruiser Prado TX with rooftop tent at $75/day. For serious overlanders or remote parks like Kidepo or CKGR, the Land Cruiser Hardtop (Troopy) at $100/day is the gold standard. View all options at our fleet page.

Can I camp across multiple countries in one trip?

Absolutely โ€” multi-country camping routes are our speciality. We handle all cross-border permits, COMESA insurance and vehicle documentation for seamless travel between Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, DR Congo and Botswana. Request a quote with your planned countries and we’ll handle the rest.

How far in advance should I book campsites?

For peak season (Juneโ€“October and Decemberโ€“January), book popular campsites like Seronera (Serengeti), Third Bridge (Moremi Botswana) and Buhoma (Bwindi) at least 3โ€“6 months ahead. For low season travel, 2โ€“4 weeks is usually sufficient. Our team can assist with campsite booking alongside your vehicle hire.

Is it safe to camp in East African national parks?

Designated campsites inside national parks are generally very safe โ€” wildlife attacks at established campsites are extremely rare. Follow basic rules: never leave food in your tent, don’t walk around camp at night without a torch, and always keep your vehicle secure. Our team provides a full safety briefing before departure.
