Technical Guide: 2026 Cross-Border Requirements for East Africa (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania)

Crossing international borders in a self-drive 4×4 is one of the most rewarding adventures in Africa, but it requires precise contact usdocumentation. At Car Hire Africa, we simplify this process. If you are planning to “Drive Your Own Safari” across borders in 2026, here is your essential technical checklist.

1. Mandatory Vehicle Documentation

To exit Uganda and enter a neighboring country, the vehicle must have a “Travel File” prepared by our HQ in Bugolobi. This includes:

Original Logbook (or Certified Copy): Proof of vehicle ownership.

Authorization Letter: A formal document from Car Hire Africa granting you permission to take the vehicle across specific borders.

COMESA Yellow Card Insurance: This is the most critical document. It provides third-party liability coverage across 13+ African nations.

Cost: Approximately $40 – $50 USD for a 14-day period.

Renewal: If your trip exceeds Request A Quote14 days, you must renew this at the nearest major border or insurance office.

2. The “East Africa Tourist Visa” (The Golden Ticket)

For travelers visiting Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, do not buy separate visas.

The EATV: Costs $100 USD and is valid for 90 days.

Multiple Entry: It allows you to move between these three countries as many times as you like.

Important: You must apply for this visa through the country where you first land. If you land at Entebbe, apply via the Uganda e-Visa portal.

• Note: Tanzania is NOT part of this agreement. A separate Tanzanian eVisa ($50-$100) is required.

3. Country-Specific Fees & Taxes (2026 Rates)

While the East African Community (EAC) has simplified trade, private vehicles still incur local “entry” fees:
